Typical Use Cases

The Audioflow Smart Speaker Switch is carefully designed to be a convenient and safe way of switching between multiple speakers in a typical domestic multi-room audio system. It is perfect for connecting ceiling speakers, on-wall and in-wall speakers, bookshelf speakers and outdoor speakers to a single amplifier.

You would be able to connect speakers in different areas. For example, a Bedroom / Dressing / Ensuite, or an Open Plan Kitchen / Dining / Living Room / Garden without the expense of multiple amplifiers. The speaker switch can enable and disable any combination of the speakers attached to it, providing lots of flexibility.

Important Notes

DO NOT use the Audioflow Speaker Switch for 100V / High Voltage audio systems as used in commercial installations and for public address.

DO NOT use the Audioflow Speaker Switch for unintended purposes, such as connecting one pair of speakers to multiple amplifiers, lighting control or any other electrical purpose.

DO NOT chain the output from one switch to the input of another switch.

ALWAYS take note of the impedance of your speaker system and the minimum impedance rating of your amplifier

Impedance

It is important that your speaker system does not fall below the minimum impedance accepted by your amplifier. You should note that most amplifiers accept a minimum of 4Ω speaker loads, some can accept lower and some have higher minimums – please check your own amplifier specifications.

You should look at your speaker specifications to note their impedance rating. Long speaker cable runs can increase your speaker impedance. Also, note that speakers can reach low impedances when playing low frequencies at high volumes.

For the Audioflow 3S-2Z 2-Zone Switch your minimum impedance is simply the lowest you connect to the switch.

For example if you have 1x 6Ω Speaker Pair and 1x 8Ω Speaker Pair, the minimum impedance presented to your amplifier would be 6Ω.

For the Audioflow 3S-3Z 3-Zone Switch you can work out your minimum impedance. Connect your speakers in order of impedance with the smallest at Zone A and then use the following formula (where ImpA is the impedance of the speakers connected to Zone A, and ImpB is the impedance of the speakers connected to Zone B):

     "\[ \boxed{Imp_{Min}=\frac1{\frac1{Imp_A}\;+\:\frac1{Imp_B}}} \]"

For example; if all of your speakers are 8Ω, the system would present a minimum impedance of 4Ω to your amplifier.

For the Audioflow 3S-4Z 4-Zone Switch you can work out your minimum impedance in a similar fashion. Connect your speakers in order of impedance with the smallest at Zone A and then use the following formula (where ImpA is the impedance of the speakers connected to Zone A, and ImpC is the impedance of the speakers connected to Zone C):

     "\[ \boxed{Imp_{Min}=\frac1{\frac1{Imp_A}\;+\:\frac1{Imp_C}}} \]"

For example; if all of your speakers are 8Ω, the system would present a minimum impedance of 4Ω to your amplifier.

Impedance Matching

The Audioflow Speaker Switch has impedance matching circuitry – what this does is connect your speakers in combinations of Series and Parallel Wiring so that the impedance presented to your amplifier stays within acceptable limits when various combinations of speakers are selected by the switch.
